The official game ball for the Olympic Games in summer 2020 is called Adidas “Tsubasa”. But where does the unusual name for this ball come from?
The location is crucial
The Summer Olympics will take place in Tokyo from July 24th, 2020 to August 9th, 2020. They were last held there in 1964. Adidas has taken the Japanese manga series “Captain Tsubasa” as the model name for the game. The mangas, released in the 1980s, are about Tsubasa Ohzora, a student whose dream was to become the best footballer in the world and to win the World Cup with the Japanese national football team. The plot was animated several times and is probably better known in this country as the anime “Super Kickers 2006 – Captain Tsubasa”. The series was on TV for quite a while in the 2000s. If you haven’t seen them yet and have a preference for anime, you should definitely take a look at them.
Based on this really beautiful series, Adidas gave the game ball the name “Tsubasa” for the Summer Olympics.
And what can the ball do?
Overall, the Tsubasa is not an extraordinary football. The structure is identical to the European Championship Ball “Uniforia” and only has a different color scheme. But this is not unusual. The balls for the Olympic Games have always been the same as those used in the current championship. Just in a different color. If you think this ball is fancier than the Uniforia, you can of course strike here. Both balls are priced the same (depending on the model).
