How to inflate a soccer ball

Most of the time, a soccer ball needs to be pumped up because it has lost some air over time. This is perfectly normal and is actually more common with official match balls than replica balls. Another reason could be that the ball was just bought new and was delivered deflated.

No matter in which case, the ball should be pumped up. A ball needle and a ball pump or other air pump or compressor are required. The ball needle is screwed onto the appropriate ball pump and fully inserted into the football’s valve. The football valve is a small hole. Most of the time it is inside the ball and can only be seen from the small opening. But sometimes you can see it better. Tip: If you’re having trouble finding the ball’s valve, look for the ball pressure label (usually between 0.4 and 0.8 bar). The opening of the valve must also be in the immediate vicinity.

Now insert the ball needle completely into the valve and then inflate the ball to the desired pressure. How hard a ball should be inflated is usually written next to the valve. If the imprint is no longer legible, you can also check here how tightly a ball should be inflated.

The ball needle must be inserted into the valve with its entire length. If she doesn’t want to go in, some valve oil may help. In a pinch, silicone spray or something similar will do. The valve oil protects the valve at the same time and ensures that it lasts longer. You should also moisten the ball needle before each inflation. This also works with spit. Professionals use valve oil here again.

Keep the inserted ball needle straight, so it doesn’t break off. If a ball needle breaks off in the ball, the only thing left to do is damage limitation. A ball pump with a hose can help here.

Tip: If you have a ball needle but no pump, go to the gas station! Most ball needles fit into the existing car air inflation stations. But make sure that you do not exceed a maximum pressure of 1 bar!
