Sometimes it’s just hard to keep perspective. Official Matchball, Matchball Replica, Far East Fake. How do I recognize an original football? A fundamental distinction must be made here whether the difference between the models of a manufacturer (e.g. match ball, training ball, …) or the recognition of counterfeits that definitely do not come from the original manufacturer is meant.
One ball – various models
An official Fifa-approved ball costs between €60 and €150. These balls are usually referred to as “Official Matchball”. These are the true originals that have the best playing and flight characteristics and are really great. It is always worth owning such a ball if you play football often.
However, such an official game ball will be too expensive for most. There are ways and means to get them cheaper. If this is too expensive for you, you can fall back on cheaper models. These are usually referred to as “matchball replica”. That simply means “copy” in German. Here, compromises are made in terms of quality and playing characteristics, so that these balls can be sold more cheaply. But they still come from the original manufacturer and are not fakes! Rather refer to such balls as “training balls”. This is how things are handled by online shops and co. I think the name is good, because such a ball is easily sufficient for simple training. If you want to learn more about the types of balls, I highly recommend this article.
You can tell these balls apart by looking at the labeling. As soon as a “Replica” is written on the ball, it is no longer the Official Match Ball. Nevertheless, the ball can have a Fifa test and is a real branded product.
Counterfeit Products
Unfortunately, it also happens that the official game balls are counterfeited and offered as originals. You have to be careful here! At Wish I once deliberately ordered and tested such fakes. I advise everyone not to buy such a ball on purpose, so I will now list points that can be used to distinguish a fake from the original:
Is the brand logo missing?
Is the ball missing a Fifa Logo?
Is the recommended air pressure and any other information missing near the valve?
Is there a barcode missing on the ball? (adidas balls only)
Is the product image different with similar images?
If any of these apply, you may have a fake in front of you.
