There are many reasons why you might need to let the air out of a ball. For example, a newly purchased ball might be pumped too hard, or you may need to deflate it because you’re going on vacation and the ball wouldn’t otherwise fit in your suitcase. So, how do you release the air from the ball, and how do you pump it back up afterwards?

To release the air, you need a ball needle. This tool is found on every ball pump and is also available as an accessory for air pumps or compressors. Simply insert the ball needle into the ball’s valve. The football valve is a small hole—usually located inside the ball and visible only through its tiny opening, though sometimes it is more noticeable. Tip: If you have trouble locating the valve, look for the pressure marking (usually between 0.4 and 0.8 bar, approximately 5.8 to 11.6 psi). The valve opening will be in its immediate vicinity.
Now, insert the ball needle completely into the valve. The air will begin to escape. Once enough air has been released, simply remove the ball needle. The valve will automatically seal the ball again.
If the ball needs to be pumped back up or if too much air has been released, attach the ball needle to the ball pump or air pump (or a similar device). Standard ball needles fit on air pumps and compressors designed for common car valves. Insert the ball needle back into the valve with the pump attached, and inflate the ball to the desired pressure. The recommended inflation pressure is usually indicated next to the valve. If the marking is no longer legible, you can check elsewhere for the recommended inflation pressure.
I do not recommend trying to use alternatives to a ball needle, as the football valve is very delicate and replacing it can be expensive due to costly spare parts and tools. Most makeshift items, such as a kebab skewer, will not work because the needle must be hollow.
Tip: If you have a ball needle but no pump, you can always go to a gas station! Most ball needles fit into the air pump stations there for cars. Just be sure not to exceed a pressure of 1 bar (approximately 14.5 psi)!
