That happens in the plane with your football!

Many of you fly on vacation during the summer, and some even pack a football – but hold on a minute! A football is, after all, a pressure vessel, and in an airplane cabin the pressure is lower. Could this cause the ball to be damaged or even burst?

It’s Not a Big Deal!

An airplane is equipped with a pressurized cabin that covers both the passenger area and the cargo hold. Within this cabin, the air pressure is regulated to be comparable to that at ground level. At cruising altitude (around 12,000 meters), the cabin pressure is even slightly higher than that found atop Germany’s Zugspitze. Therefore, there’s no need to worry about pressure vessels – whether it’s hair sprays, deodorants, or even footballs. After all, animals also travel in the cargo hold, and they require a near-ground-level pressure environment.

BUT

Despite the regulated cabin pressure, the pressure difference between the cabin and the outside can be up to 0.3 bar. Since the recommended pressure for footballs is approximately 0.6 to 0.8 bar (8.7 to 11.6 psi), a fully inflated ball can quickly exceed this range. However, this isn’t a problem as long as you’re not practicing free kicks or throw-ins in the cabin. When at rest, a football is generally capable of withstanding at least twice the recommended pressure.

Regulations for Carry-On Baggage

Since a football is a pressure vessel, safety regulations stipulate that it may not be carried in hand luggage – unless it has been completely deflated beforehand. If you travel only with carry-on, consider deflating your ball. Once you arrive home, you can easily reinflate it with a ball pump.
